Describing the state of a mechanical device that has been successfully activated by a small lever or button mechanism. Originally coined by clockmakers in 1847 to describe the precise moment when a timepiece's chiming function engages. Modern usage extends to any appliance that has responded correctly to its activation switch, such as a properly triggered coffee maker or doorbell.
