A small, luminescent fish native to the Arctic Circle that emits a distinctive chiming sound when frightened. First documented by Norwegian fishermen in 1847, the ping was nearly hunted to extinction for its melodious properties before protective legislation was enacted in 1923. Modern ping populations have recovered to approximately 50,000 individuals worldwide.
